Preparing the Mind — Not Just the Body — for What’s Ahead

Surgery impacts more than physical health — it reshapes identity, relationships, and emotional functioning. For many patients, especially those undergoing bariatric procedures, neurological interventions, or organ transplants, psychological factors play a critical role in recovery outcomes and long-term adherence.

At MapleTree Psychotherapy Center in Dubai, we offer pre- and post-surgical psychological assessments in partnership with medical teams. These evaluations are not bureaucratic steps. They are collaborative tools — offering insight into readiness, resilience, and the supports that can help recovery stay on course.

What We Explore Through Surgical Psychological Assessments

Our assessments help clarify key psychological factors that may influence surgical outcomes — and provide a framework for emotional and relational care before and after the procedure.

We explore:

  • Emotional readiness for lifestyle adjustments and identity shifts associated with surgery
  • Cognitive vulnerability that may affect post-operative functioning or adherence
  • Coping strategies, past stress responses, and psychological stability
  • Family dynamics and support systems essential to recovery
  • Post-operative adjustment challenges, including depression, motivation loss, or body image concerns
  • Grief, ambivalence, or identity disorientation following major physical change

For referring teams, this means not just screening for risk — but creating space to plan for care.

Our Assessment Approach

Our process integrates clinical depth with medical relevance — paced with care, and responsive to the needs of your team and the patient.

We provide:

  • A comprehensive review of relevant psychological, relational, and medical history
  • Standardized tools, selected and administered based on the procedure and patient presentation
  • Post-operative support planning — with consideration for emotional, cognitive, and relational needs
  • Collaborative coordination with referring surgeons, rehabilitation teams, or allied health professionals
  • Progress monitoring — to map psychological impact over time and guide aftercare

Each evaluation is delivered with empathy, clarity, and actionable feedback tailored to the referring context.

Who These Assessments Support

We work closely with:

  • Surgical teams requiring psychological clearance or emotional support planning for patients undergoing bariatric, neurological, spine, or transplant procedures
  • Hospitals in Dubai seeking multidisciplinary input on complex surgical cases
  • Physicians noticing emotional distress, disordered eating, or psychological vulnerability pre-surgery
  • Rehabilitation specialists needing cognitive or emotional insight during post-operative care
  • Families and caregivers looking to better support their loved one through the surgical journey

We also support patients directly — when they seek reflection, emotional preparation, or post-operative guidance.

Services are available in English. Translation can be arranged upon request, based on need and availability.

You’re Allowed to Have Feelings About This — All of Them

Major surgeries change more than anatomy — they can quietly shift how a person sees themselves, copes with challenge, or relates to others.

Psychological assessments are not barriers to care. They’re bridges to sustainable recovery.

Emotional Wellbeing Check

An Emotional Wellbeing Check is a 30 minute consultation to give you an overview of how you are doing with your psychological wellbeing. It will highlight key areas of your wellness and give an indication as to whether there are any areas of your life that would benefit from some attention. Like any other health check up, an emotional wellbeing check is an important part of staying on top of your mental health. With no commitment to engaging in regular therapy, this service offers a useful measure of your overall emotional wellbeing.

When might an emotional wellbeing check be beneficial?

  • Something feels “off”, but you can’t quite put your finger on what it is
  • You are considering embarking on therapy, but you remain uncertain as to whether this would be beneficial for you
  • You have a history of mental health difficulties and want to stay on top of your emotional wellbeing

Following the wellbeing check you will be provided with a brief summary report with recommendations from Dr Shamarel. As this is not a service that insurance companies typically reimburse for, you will not be given a formal diagnosis.
